What is Abdominal Hernias?

An Abdominal Hernia occurs when there is a tear in the inner lining of the abdominal wall (the outer layer of muscle, fat and tissue that extends from the bottom of the ribs to the top of the thighs), causing a bulge in the abdominal wall where the organs protrude. The bulge can be either reducible, which means that by applying slight pressure to the area, you can feel the organs being pushed into the abdominal cavity and the hernia will flatten and disappear, or non reducible, which means the fat or tissue cannot be pushed into the abdomen and the hernia will not flatten. Whether a Abdominal Hernia is reducible depends on how far it protrudes through the abdominal wall and how tightly it is held by the abdominal muscles.

Abdominal Hernias Causes

Although Abdominal Hernias can be present at birth, others develop later in life. Some Abdominal Hernias causes involve pathways formed during fetal development, existing openings in the abdominal cavity, or areas of abdominal-wall weakness. Any condition that increases the pressure of the abdominal cavity may contribute to the formation or worsening of a hernia. Examples include:

  • Obesity,

  • Heavy lifting,

  • Coughing,

  • Straining during a bowel movement or urination,

  • Fluid in the abdominal cavity

A family history of hernias can be the biggest Abdominal Hernias cause that makes you more likely to develop the same.

Abdominal Hernias Signs and Symptoms

The Abdominal Hernias signs and symptoms can range from noticing a painless lump to the painful, tender, swollen protrusion of tissue that you are unable to push back into the abdomen (an incarcerated strangulated hernia). While it is more common for an abdominal hernia to develop at the weak spot in the wall of the abdomen and can be caused by coughing, pregnancy, heavy lifting, old age, past surgical procedures, obesity, or losing too much weight.

Abdominal Hernias types

  • Inguinal Hernia: This Abdominal Hernia Type occurs at the internal ring in the groin area. The intestine drops down into the internal ring and can extend down into the scrotum in men or to the outer folds of the vagina in women. An indirect inguinal hernia can be the result of an inherited weakness at the internal ring or one that occurs later in life. The latter is known as an acquired hernia.

  • Indirect Inguinal Hernia: This is a less common than an indirect inguinal hernia, a direct inguinal hernia occurs near the internal ring instead of within it. They are acquired hernias that usually occur after age 40 as a result of aging or injury.

  • Epigastric Hernia; This Abdominal Hernia Types occurs as a result of a weakness in the muscles of the -middle abdomen, above the navel. Men are about three times more likely to have an epigastric hernia than women, and the majority occurs in people between 20 and 50 years of age.

  • Umbilical Hernia: Another natural area of weakness in the abdomen is the navel, which, like the internal ring, is made up of tissue that is thinner than that in the rest of the abdomen. These Abdominal Hernia Types can occur in babies, children and adults.

  • Femoral Hernia: A femoral hernia occurs in the area between the abdomen and the thigh, and appears as a bulge on the upper thigh. This type Abdominal Hernia Types is more common in women than men.

  • Incisional Hernia: A type of hernia called incisional can occur at the site of an incision from a previous surgery. The fat or tissue pushes through a weakness created by the surgical scar. An incisional hernia can occur months or years after the initial surgery.

Abdominal Hernia Treatment

Abdominal Hernia Treatment comprises of Hernia repair surgery which is an effective and long lasting treatment for hernias. Successful surgery will end discomfort, repair the hernia, and stop the hernia from progressing. The surgical procedure for Abdominal Hernia Treatment is a Laparoscopic procedure in which a fiber optic viewing tube and special instruments are used to repair the hernia without making a large incision. This procedure of Abdominal Hernia Treatment requires less recovery time than traditional hernia repair surgery. The surgery will result in three small incisions; one is usually located in the naval and one on each side of the tummy just above the waistline. The surgery will result in scars about 10 mm in length. These scars will fade in time. The patient may be requested to stay a few days after surgery so that they may be carefully evaluated and returned home in good health. After Abdominal Hernia Treatment, time should be allowed for rest and recovery at home.

Stomach Pain Pressure Applied

What specific foods cause appendicitis? And are my leading to appendicitis?

I have had a that’s in my lower right abdomen that comes and goes, but sometimes when i apply pressure it hurts, and sometimes it doesn’t and the goes away, but i don’t have pains though, only minor pains but only if i apply pressure. please help…

i have never heard of foods causing appendicitis. There are herbs that can bring on an attack if you already have a problem. Black cohash is one of those herbs.

I had appendicitis and emergency surgery in 1999. I felt sick, nauseated and off, for a long while beforehand. I don’t recall actually having stomach pains until the evening before the attack. It was terrible by the morning. Very crampy. And I started getting sick, as if I had the flu. The pain became serious very quickly. It feels like someone is taking your innards, grabbing and squeezing, and then pulling them downwards as hard as possible. It gets faster as time goes on. It is truly awful.

You might have some signs of a problem. It could also be your gallbladder. I would suggest getting some tests done. Ask your dr. And don’t wait too long!

Take care!

Chronic Abdominal Pain Clinic

How long should you wait for addicted spouse to clean up?

My DH and I met through recovery rooms and things were fine until he started using, I suspect just before the wedding. He was very scared when I found out but now (3 years later) he is just defensive and actually stole all my medication from me after I had abdominal surgery. He smokes pot to and lies right to my face about it but I have found the roaches in the “butt-huts” outside our house. He has and functioned well when he was not using medication. Now all he does is lay on the couch and watch TV. He is regularly taking time off work due to or some sort of discomfort.

I spoke with his sister so the “secret” I have had for over a year is out – that feels good. I have made him an appointment for a pain management – for an assessment. I am requiring him to go and I need for him to be drug free bacause as long as he has drugs available I feel that he is not respecting the fact that I am a recovering addict too (coming up on 9 years). Is this reasonable?

Sounds reasonable to me. I’d give it a year, and if you see one instance of him going to his old ways, get rid of him. Don’t live in misery just because you “love” him. You can find love/happiness without misery.
